Nix, Bitcoin Node Client, Relaunched as Bitcoinix
On October 14, 2026, Pavol Rusnak announced the relaunch of the nix-bitcoin project under the name Bitcoinix. This change marks the beginning of a new phase for the software, which is now a community-driven fork. Bitcoinix aims to keep the software updated and continue its development after the original project was shut down in August 2026. The nix-bitcoin team invited the community to fork the code, leading to the birth of Bitcoinix. This software facilitates the installation of full Bitcoin nodes and emphasizes security, simplicity, and integrity. Bitcoinix uses the Tor network for outgoing connections and supports incoming connections through hidden services. It can be implemented on dedicated hardware, virtual machines, or containers, and is designed for personal or merchant wallets. Although it can be used in production, developers warn that Bitcoinix is still experimental. The project's roadmap indicates that most packages will be moved to the main branch of nixpkgs, aiming to function as a collection of secure service modules. A strict policy has been established regarding inactive projects, ensuring that no long-term inactive projects will be added.
