Bitonic reports hack, bitcoin stolen from three customers
The Dutch bitcoin company Bitonic has reported a security incident in which unauthorized individuals gained access to part of its systems on Sunday evening, October 25. Three customer accounts were affected, with small amounts of bitcoin withdrawn without permission. Bitonic has fully compensated the victims and states that the cold wallets were not compromised. The attackers exploited a vulnerability, and in two of the three accounts, the login credentials were also changed. The exact amount of bitcoin that has disappeared has not been disclosed. The vulnerability has since been fixed, and as a precaution, the hot wallets have been temporarily taken offline. The investigation is not yet complete, so Bitonic cannot rule out that personal data of other customers may have been accessed. All active sessions have been terminated, and customers must log in again. Bitcoin withdrawals are being monitored more closely, which may lead to longer processing times. Customers are warned to be extra vigilant against phishing messages and are advised to switch to an authenticator app for two-factor authentication.
