Druckenmiller, Legendary Trader, Holds Closed-Door Meeting: US Rates Too Low, Dovish Stance Absurd, AI May Have Profit Bubble
Author: Yang Chen, Wall Street Insights
Stanley Druckenmiller criticized the dovish members of the Federal Reserve during a closed-door meeting on Wall Street and warned about a potential valuation bubble in AI.
Druckenmiller, a long-time mentor to former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and Fed Chair John Williams, previously worked with George Soros and participated in the historic battle against the British pound. His family office, Duquesne Capital, has amassed significant wealth. Williams was a partner at Duquesne Capital before becoming Fed Chair.
According to the Financial Times, Druckenmiller stated at a closed-door meeting hosted by Piper Sandler in New York on Thursday morning that rate cuts "are no longer necessary" and bluntly remarked, "It is absurd for Fed members to repeatedly claim that the federal funds rate is restrictive."
At the same time, Druckenmiller warned of a "profit bubble" risk in the AI sector and revealed that his positions in AI have been reduced to 20% of what they were six months ago.
On Thursday, the yield on 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds rose by 7 basis points to 5.36%, the highest level since 2007; meanwhile, the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds is approaching the 5% mark. As the market gradually digests expectations of a Fed rate hike next week, short-term Treasury yields have also risen.
Interest Rate View: Rising Bond Yields Supported by Fundamentals
Druckenmiller stated that given the current economic situation, the surge in capital expenditures, and the global competition for capital, bond yields, if deviating, are "at best too low." He characterized the recent rise in yields as a "slow, fundamentally driven increase" and stated that this trend "is not concerning."
"I believe in common sense; you just need to look at the prices of various global assets to understand," he said.
Druckenmiller's market position in the macroeconomic field is closely watched due to his special connection with the current Fed Chair. He referred to Williams as one of his "closest friends" and stated that he would be "an excellent Fed Chair," but also noted that he no longer has direct communication with Williams.
AI Warning: From "Incredible Journey" to Growing Concerns
Although Druckenmiller admitted that AI investments have brought substantial returns to Duquesne—most of its recent profits have come from AI bets rather than traditional macro strategies like currencies or bonds—he has clearly shifted to a more cautious stance.
He revealed that Duquesne's holdings in AI have been cut down to 20% of what they were six months ago.
"This entire AI wave has brought us an incredible journey," he said, "but I believe the construction cycle is late enough that people need to start being cautious."
He warned that there is a disturbing narrative logic on Wall Street—believing that high corporate profits will drive the market to rise indefinitely.
"We are likely in a profit bubble because this AI construction boom will eventually end. To be honest, the banking sector is also trading in AI, and these people have made hundreds of millions when bringing related companies public."
Druckenmiller stated that his deep understanding of AI partly comes from young analysts embedded in the company’s "AI research lab circle."
Currency Strategy: Shorting Euro and Pound, Not Daring to Short Dollar
Regarding currency, Druckenmiller mentioned that he has been continuously shorting the euro and the pound since the beginning of the year but emphasized that his current positions are much smaller than his historical levels—he has historically built currency bets equivalent to twice his net worth.
He stated that he does not dare to short the dollar, citing the U.S.'s significant global advantage in AI, while Europe is "not even in the game" in this arena.
