659,090 Individual Entrepreneurs in Ukraine Work in Trade
As of early September 2026, there are 659,090 individual entrepreneurs (IEs) in Ukraine working in retail trade, accounting for almost one-third of all entrepreneurs. The majority of them operate in non-specialized stores and markets. In 2021, 2022, and 2025, the number of IEs decreased, particularly in 2022, when nearly 25,000 more IEs closed than opened. However, in 2026, there is a growth trend: in the first eight months, 8,196 more IEs opened than closed. Of these, 208,000 IEs (32%) are engaged in trade in non-specialized stores, 159,900 (24%) in markets and stalls, and 107,400 (16%) outside of stores, including online. Additionally, 82,800 IEs trade in specialized stores, while 47,600 deal in food and beverages. Dnipropetrovsk region leads in the number of IEs in retail trade with 46,400, followed by Odesa (44,500), Kyiv (43,900), Lviv (40,700), and Kharkiv (40,600) regions. From January to June 2026, 141,400 new IEs opened in Ukraine, while 102,200 closed, which is 36% less than in the same period last year.
