A man from Virginia, USA, has been found guilty of defrauding investors of over $2.5 million. Jihoon Park, 52, was convicted on three counts of wire fraud and two counts of bankruptcy fraud, having promised victims safe investments and high returns, then directed funds to be transferred to himself. Park used part of the investment money to purchase real estate and cryptocurrency, and when one victim filed a lawsuit, he transferred assets to his wife and filed for bankruptcy, hiding millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. The Department of Justice stated that Park reported financial assets of only $0.34 in his bankruptcy filings, while he actually held millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. Park began Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings on January 14, 2025, and the court allowed the bankruptcy trustee to proceed with asset recovery. Park also waived his right to bankruptcy discharge, and he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years for wire fraud and up to 5 years for bankruptcy fraud. Sentencing is scheduled for December 10, 2026.
