Will the Republican Party Lose the Elections? Cryptocurrencies May Benefit...
The midterm elections for Congress will take place on November 3. Many indicators suggest that the Republican Party will lose. Will cryptocurrencies gain from this?
Will Republicans Lose?
Next Tuesday, November 3, American voters will elect 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 out of 100 senators (33 seats in regular elections and two additional special elections). Polls suggest that the Democratic Party will win the battle for Congress, with a 8-11 percentage point lead over the Republican Party.
Currently, the Republican Party holds a majority in both chambers of Congress. The upper chamber looks interesting, as it consists of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two independent senators who belong to the Democratic Party caucus. Democrats need to take just four seats from Republicans to gain control of the Senate (assuming they do not lose any of their current seats).
Key elections will take place in Texas, Michigan, Maine, Kansas, and Alaska. In the first two -- as polls suggest -- Democrats will win, while in Maine and Kansas it is hard to speak of an advantage for either party.
Let’s also look at the popularity of the president. In the latest poll conducted by Ipsos for Reuters, Americans expressed their support for Donald Trump. Only 32% support him, which is 1 percentage point more compared to last week’s survey. 66% of respondents have a negative opinion of the occupant of the White House. This shows that the head of state is not helping the Republicans.

What Does This Mean for Cryptocurrencies?
It seems that the Republican Party is likely to lose control of the American parliament, which could hinder Trump from implementing further changes. Before we proceed, let’s check what Congress actually does.
Its main task is to legislate. Congress prepares, passes, and sends federal bills (concerning taxes, the economy, defense, or internal affairs) to the president. Additionally, it oversees the executive branch (audits, calling officials for hearings). Congress also passes the state budget.
The Senate is significant for foreign policy: it must give consent (by a two-thirds majority) for the ratification of official international treaties and approves key presidential nominations. Congress also formally declares war.
In the case of cryptocurrencies, the key issue will be the creation of regulations for the digital asset market. The CLARITY Act has stalled in the Senate, but in the new term, politicians may return to this document. However, it will likely come with amendments from the Democrats. Senator Elizabeth Warren could have a significant impact on market regulation. On one hand, she is known for her critical approach to cryptocurrencies, so we may worry that the new version of the CLARITY Act will be more stringent than the current one. The question remains whether the market will react positively if the bill is passed at all. The only question left is whether Trump will sign the new variant.

If the Democrats have a majority in Congress, they will also be able to limit the administration's freedom of action. Greater control over the White House in this context could reduce the risk of abrupt political decisions, which for investors -- including in cryptocurrencies -- could be a potentially good signal and an invitation to invest.
