Deripaska Halts Four Rusal Plants Due to $800 Million Losses
Rusal, owned by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, may suspend operations at four alumina and bauxite production plants due to annual losses of $800 million. The closures are planned for the Pikalevsky alumina plant, the North Ural bauxite mine, as well as the Bogoslovsky and Ural alumina plants. In 2025, these plants produced 2.1 million tons of alumina, accounting for about 30.7% of the company's total output. The loss from processing raw materials at these plants is estimated at $400 per ton of aluminum. Rusal is also seeking government support to avoid layoffs in the mono-cities where its facilities are located. In 2025, Rusal's revenue increased by 22.6% to $14.81 billion, but the company reported a net loss of $455 million. The net profit for the first half of 2026 was $419 million compared to a loss of $87 million a year earlier. Rusal controls 5.3% of the world's aluminum production and 4.7% of alumina production.
