Chinese Hacker Breaches Over 100 Corporate Websites Using AI
A hacker who speaks Chinese has breached over 100 corporate websites using an artificial intelligence (AI) agent. The hacker directed the attacks and entrusted the process of vulnerability exploration and infiltration to the AI, with the total cost of the attacks estimated at around $5,000. Targets included American agricultural machinery manufacturer Deere, appliance company SharkNinja, and engine manufacturer Cummins. The hacker began attacking e-commerce websites in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan from the 25th of last month, attempting attacks on over 1,200 sites and successfully breaching more than 100. Successful infiltrations took an average of 23 hours, with the AI exploring vulnerabilities based on instructions of fewer than 100 Chinese characters. The open-source AI platform Kearn was used in the attacks, leading to reports of large-scale theft of credit card information. Deere has completed necessary response measures, and SharkNinja reported that it blocked the attacks. Cummins is investigating the potential for cyber attacks on external partner websites. The security industry is warning that cyber attacks utilizing AI are on the rise.
