OpenAI Astra Launch Drives Surge in Storage Chips
The release of OpenAI's latest flagship model, Astra, has sparked enthusiasm in the market for AI infrastructure, making storage chips a key beneficiary. Semiconductor stocks in the U.S. rose collectively last Friday, with Micron Technology up over 6% and SanDisk up nearly 12%. On Monday, Asian markets continued the upward trend, with SK Hynix rising about 8%, Samsung Electronics up over 5%, and Kioxia increasing around 10%. Institutions predict that as AI model capabilities improve, the demand for computing power will further increase, potentially exacerbating bottlenecks in storage and networking. HBM and DRAM are expected to become important focal points in AI infrastructure transactions. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley estimate that global AI capital expenditures will reach between $1.3 trillion and $1.5 trillion by 2027, with more than half allocated for memory construction. Charu Channa, Chief Investment Strategist at Saxo Bank, stated that the launch of Astra will support continued growth in AI spending, and the increased demand for computing power from cutting-edge models will benefit storage chip manufacturers like SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. As AI models enhance, the focus of computing transactions is shifting towards storage transactions, making storage chips a significant beneficiary in the new wave of AI infrastructure investment.
