Lithuania Freezes Assets of Friedman and Usmanov After Their Removal from EU Sanctions List
Lithuania has imposed national sanctions and frozen the assets of Russian oligarchs Mikhail Friedman and Alisher Usmanov following their removal from the European Union sanctions list. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that the assets were frozen under the national sanctions system. Budrys emphasized that Russia's war against Ukraine is supported by influential businessmen who continue to profit from the aggression. The removal of Friedman and Usmanov from the EU list was described as a wrong signal, and the minister called for increased pressure on the aggressor. In early October, EU ambassadors extended sanctions for violations of Ukraine's territorial integrity for three years, covering about 3,000 businessmen and politicians, but Friedman and Usmanov were excluded at the request of Slovakia, France, and Luxembourg. Ukraine imposed personal sanctions against these oligarchs back in October 2022, and the processes for seizing their assets in Ukraine are actively ongoing.
