Kalshi Suspends Laurie Buckhout for Betting on Own Election
Kalshi has suspended North Carolina Republican House candidate Laurie Buckhout for three years after she placed bets on her own election. Buckhout, who launched her campaign in December 2025 for North Carolina's 1st Congressional District, bought less than 1000 dollars in contracts against Democratic Rep. Don Davis. As a candidate, she was deemed a direct decision maker over the outcome, violating Rule 5.17(z) of Kalshi's rulebook. The suspension took effect on Friday, imposing a penalty of 2589.96 dollars, more than double her wager. Buckhout admitted to the wager, calling it a "dumb mistake" and stated she attempted to rectify the situation upon realizing the issue. This marks at least the fourth instance of Kalshi penalizing candidates for trading on their own contests. Previous suspensions include Minnesota state Senator Matt Klein, former Texas congressional candidate Ezekiel Enriquez, and Virginia Senate candidate Mark Moran, each penalized for similar violations. Earlier this week, Kalshi permanently banned former Rep. George Santos, fining him 71356 dollars for trades related to his attendance at the State of the Union address. Buckhout won the Republican primary in March and is set for a rematch against Davis, having lost to him in 2024 by less than two percentage points.
