Germany's Inflation Rate Rises to 2.9%, Rate Hike Expectations Strengthen
On August 31, Germany's consumer prices rose by 2.9% year-on-year, up from 2.8% the previous month, marking the highest level since April, although lower than analysts' forecast of 3.1%. The failure to reach a peace agreement in the Middle East has once again made energy prices a major driver of inflation, while prices for services and food have eased. Data from France and Spain also indicate that rising oil and gas prices are pushing regional inflation, increasing pressure on the European Central Bank to take action. ECB officials have already raised rates once and are expected to do so again on September 10, with traders betting that monetary policy will tighten further next year.
