FTX Executive Criticizes Netflix's 'Love Story' Portrayal of the Incident
Key Points of This Article
- Former executive criticizes the trailer for "The Altruists"
- Claims it is "disconnected from the actual workplace and character portrayals"
Disagreement Over Drama Inspired by FTX Collapse
Constance Wang, the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, criticized the content of the upcoming Netflix drama series "The Altruists" on the 10th, stating that it is inaccurate.
She expressed strong disgust after watching the trailer. Having lost everything due to FTX's collapse and taking a long time to recover, she emphasized that she has no intention of defending those responsible for the situation, while pointing out several inaccuracies.
First, she argued that the media prefers to highlight the narrative that "the collapse of FTX was due to partying in the Bahamas," while the actual workplace was far from such a depiction. This comment seems to refer to the party scenes included in the trailer.
Wang stated that "the core company, excluding subsidiaries, had fewer than 200 employees at its peak, while other exchanges of similar size had thousands of employees," and that many employees worked 16 to 18 hours a day for over three years, often without adequate sleep.
She also pointed out that Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO who is the model for the drama's main character, was always at his desk in the office day and night.
The drama centers around the relationship between Sam and his former girlfriend Caroline Ellison, who was also the former CEO of FTX's sister company Alameda Research. Wang mentioned that most employees did not even know the two were dating until they read articles after the collapse. She added that she had never seen Sam put his arm around anyone's shoulder.
Furthermore, she disagrees with the portrayal of Ellison's character. Although she worked with her, she stated that she had never seen the aggressive demeanor depicted in the trailer, describing Ellison as quiet, gentle, and often absorbed in her own thoughts.
Wang questioned Netflix's decision to depict the FTX collapse, which destroyed many lives, including those of employees, as a "love story."
Overview of the Drama by Netflix
According to Netflix, this drama series is "a toxic love story inspired by actual fraud incidents." It is a limited series of eight episodes, set to begin streaming on November 19. The synopsis states, "Young and idealistic, they suddenly come into immense wealth, and while attempting to do good, they end up bringing out the worst in each other."
Jacqueline Hoyt, the co-showrunner and writer of the drama, commented:
Viewers will be captivated by the intimate story of two individuals grappling with moral dilemmas behind their actions. Ultimately, I believe they will gain a deeper understanding of why they acted the way they did.
Bankman-Fried has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and is currently serving his sentence in a federal prison. Recently, he filed a petition for a review of the verdict with the Supreme Court. Ellison has cooperated with prosecutors and testified, serving 14 months of a two-year sentence before being released in January 2026.
