FIFA Withdraws Plan for $20 Billion Commercial Subsidiary
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has withdrawn its announcement of a new commercial subsidiary valued at $20 billion just four days after its release. Plans for raising up to $4.2 billion in equity and tokenizing sports assets have also lost momentum. On July 28, FIFA announced the establishment of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), stating that it would integrate commercial functions such as broadcasting rights, sponsorships, tickets, and licenses. However, due to opposition from the European Football Association (UEFA), the North American, Central American and Caribbean Football Association (CONCACAF), and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the plan was retracted on August 1. FIFA President Gianni Infantino mentioned that the project had caused divisions. The 55 member countries of UEFA agreed to boycott FIFA tournaments if the proposal was maintained. The crypto industry had been paying attention to the potential tokenization of FFE shares, but this was not confirmed through FIFA or Socios.com’s official channels. There were also dissenting opinions within FIFA, leading to the resignation of a senior advisor, raising concerns about the project's continuation. As a result of this withdrawal, FFE did not reach the member approval stage.
