Ecash Hard Fork Causes Distribution Differences Across Exchanges
The Ecash (ECX) hard fork will proceed in three stages: Alpha, Beta, and Mainnet. Users holding BTC in self-custody wallets will receive an amount of ECX equal to their balance at the time of the fork, but the receipt of ECX for amounts held on exchanges may vary depending on the policies of each operator. The official Ecash website indicates that the Alpha release is scheduled for August 23, 2026, the Beta for September 20, and the Mainnet for October 31. ECX is a Bitcoin hard fork project promoted by LayerTwo Labs, which involves duplicating the Bitcoin ledger and attaching ECX corresponding to the BTC balance for each address on the new chain. Coincheck and Zaif have stated that their policies regarding the allocation and handling of ECX have not yet been determined. OSL Indonesia announced that it will not support the credit, snapshot, or distribution of ECX tokens. If an exchange does not support the forked tokens, they may not be reflected in user accounts. Technically, ECX uses the same address format as Bitcoin, and replay protection is described as optional. The ECX plan involves allocating 600,000 ECX to Satoshi's share out of an estimated 1.1 million that are believed to be related to Satoshi, with the remaining 500,000 ECX directed towards early investors and development funds. The Mainnet is scheduled for October 31, 2026, and the remaining points to confirm are whether exchanges will support ECX and how they will manage replay risk.
