Bitcoin Core Updates Vulnerability Disclosure Policy

Bitcoin Core has updated its policy for addressing security flaws that can be easily rediscovered, particularly with the help of AI. The new policy, merged on October 22, allows developers to classify vulnerabilities as easily discoverable, enabling faster fixes and disclosures. This change aims to protect users more effectively as software can quickly rediscover bugs. Developers will issue fixes for each supported major version promptly, accompanied by a security advisory, bypassing the usual embargo based on severity. This is crucial for exchanges or payment businesses running their own nodes, as it allows for targeted repairs without waiting for major software updates. However, the accelerated process means less time for testing, increasing the risk of faulty repairs. Other disclosure rules remain in place, with low-severity issues becoming public two weeks after a major release and medium- to high-severity issues following a similar timeline. The update does not indicate a new attack on the Bitcoin network but reflects a shift in handling vulnerabilities to ensure quicker user protection.
