Bitcoin Adoption Index: El Salvador, Venezuela, Nigeria Lead in Ownership

By: bitcoinmagazine.com|2026/09/02 19:15:58

Cornell University's Bitcoin Adoption Index report reveals that El Salvador, Venezuela, and Nigeria have the highest rates of Bitcoin ownership among nearly 26,000 respondents globally. The report indicates that in these countries, Bitcoin serves as a practical solution to unstable national currencies and limited access to reliable banking, rather than merely a speculative investment. Despite widespread ownership, 58% of respondents were unaware that Bitcoin's supply is capped at 21 million coins. Users in Venezuela described Bitcoin as 'faster, cleaner, and much less risky' for obtaining dollars, while a Salvadoran noted the decentralized nature of Bitcoin grants users control. Nigeria has seen significant Bitcoin transaction volumes as citizens use it to navigate the collapse of the naira. The research was conducted by Morning Consult in collaboration with various institutions, interviewing 25,880 individuals across 25 countries from December 16, 2024, to March 10, 2025.
